How the Radio Changed the Nation
'How the Radio Changed the Nation' was my first foray into radio production aged 17. In sixth form I decided to make a documentary charting the invention of radio through in broadstrokes to the modern day through talking to current and former broadcasters. The following were recorded on amateur equipment.
These included multi award winning journalist Mike Thomson, radio producer and BBC Head of Global Compliance Jane Ray, Nigel Ogden, organist and presenter of BBC Radio 2's long running programme 'The Organist Entertains' as well as the legendary radio producer Charles Chilton.
Through their comment and experiences the 3 part series told the story of...
Episode 1: Marconi to the Outbreak of the Second World War including the founding of the BBC
Episode 2: The Role of radio during the war and its flourishing comedy and drama scene afterwards leading through till the creation of today's radio 1,2,3 and 4.
Episode 3: This part took a look at the evolution of independent radio in this country (sadly with the omission of University Radio York, the first truly independent radio station in the UK) through Radio Luxmbourg and Caroline as well as radio's responsibility for pushing the boundaries of comic taste and flourishing talent till today.
Making the series gave me an enormous insight into the processes behind creating a radio series and it was a that point I truly fell in love with the genre. Furthermore all of the contributors were impressed by the production and my interview with Charles Chilton was later broadcast on BBC Radio upon his sad death in 2013.
